When Erika learned that she would need radiation for her MALT lymphoma diagnosis, her doctor referred her to proton therapy. "I was very happy to know that there was an option for me that could minimize damage to my brain and spine," she recalls. “The opportunity to have a wonderful quality of life and enjoy more quality time with my family meant the world to me.”

Beyond appointments, scans, and treatments, Erika enjoys tending to her plants, going on walks, listening to music, watching movies, and reading. She enjoyed her hobbies throughout treatment, which provided joy and normalcy in her life. “The prospect of targeted treatment and advanced technology offered reassurance and a beacon of hope,” said Erika. “It was a little intimidating at first but gave me and my family hope of healing without pain during treatment.”

While undergoing proton therapy, Erika found that the unwavering support of her medical team made the journey smoother. “Their care, compassion, and attention to detail was wonderful," she shares. "Dr. Mangona, the clinic staff, and the front desk team were always so kind.”

Throughout treatment, Erika remained positive and credits her faith for helping her throughout the process. To those newly diagnosed, her advice is simple yet profound: "Stay strong, have faith, trust in God, and lean on family. Know that the doctors are doing their very best for us. Focus on the little joys in life and surround yourself with a support system that is there for you in the highs and lows.

For patients with brain and central nervous system cancer, proton therapy can be an ideal treatment option as it is highly precise and can be used as targeted therapy for tumors. In many cases, treating brain and spine tumors requires extremely precise technology. Proton therapy accurately delivers high doses of radiation to brain tumors to eliminate cancerous cells. It also minimizes exposure to non-targeted, healthy tissue and vital organs near the brain and spine. Proton therapy most often treats tumors in sensitive areas where conventional therapy may not be the best option.

To those considering proton therapy, Erika offers words of encouragement: "After my experience here, I can say without a doubt it is one of the best options in cancer care – I’m grateful to say that I went through treatment without any issues.”
