Prostate Cancer Survivor

Diagnosed with prostate cancer in the fall of 2024, Lawrence Jones was determined to be an advocate for his health and find answers beyond his initial options. When he learned that surgery and radiation were in his future, he phoned a friend who recommended Texas Center for Proton Therapy.

“When I was offered the option to remove my prostate and then have radiation, I figured, if I had to do radiation, I may as well seek a method to keep my prostate,” said Jones. While undergoing treatment, he was able to maintain his normal activities and looked forward to spending time with his family, who supported him throughout the course of his proton radiation treatment. “Surrounding myself with people who could lend a hand, who understood the diagnosis and have walked the same path, was key for me,” said Lawrence. “The staff and Dr. Lee have been amazing throughout this process – if I had to do it all over again, hands down this team and center would be my top choice.”

Proton therapy is a precise treatment for prostate and other cancers that delivers high doses of radiation directly to targeted areas. As a result, men get the benefit of extremely precise targeting with a lower risk for potential side effects. Treatment for prostate cancer varies by patient and may depend on how advanced the cancer is and whether it has spread to other parts of the body. In many cases, proton treatment is an ideal option for many prostate cancer patients. Proton therapy can also treat prostate cancer in more extensive targets, such as the pelvic lymph nodes, while minimizing exposure to the bladder and bowel. Texas Center for Proton Therapy also uses protons to treat patients that may need radiation after radical prostatectomy. Patients who receive proton therapy for prostate cancer may also experience fewer side effects than those receiving standard radiation therapy.

To those grappling with a cancer diagnosis and making decisions about their care, Lawrence imparted this wisdom: “keep your spirits up and give your body the best chance to heal. Weigh your options for treatment and don’t keep your condition to yourself – there are groups out there who can help you get through and provide support on your ‘off’ days.”
